Biography
Augustin Hadelich is one of the great violinists of our time. Known for his phenomenal technique, insightful and persuasive interpretations, and ravishing tone, he appears regularly on the world’s foremost concert stages. Hadelich has performed with all the major American orchestras, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and many other eminent ensembles.
In summer 2026, Hadelich appeared at leading North American festivals, including Tanglewood, Aspen, the Ravinia Festival, Bravo! Vail and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. He was “artiste étoile” of the Lucerne Festival, where his residency encompassed several concerts in a variety of formats. He also returned to the Salzburg Festival, where he performed Brahms’s Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann. A tour with the Berlin Philharmonic under Kirill Petrenko took him to Lucerne, Edinburgh and London’s BBC Proms, followed by a European tour with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck. The Pittsburgh Symphony’s performances in Hamburg and Vienna also marked the beginning of Hadelich’s residencies at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Wiener Konzerthaus, showcasing the breadth of Hadelich’s artistry.
Since February 2026, Hadelich has been Artistic Partner of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. At the Salzburg Mozartwoche in January 2027, he and the orchestra begin a multi-year cycle of Mozart’s violin concertos, featuring live recordings of the performances. Other highlights of the 2026/27 season include a performance at the renowned Berlin Waldbühne with the Berlin Philharmonic under Daniel Harding in June 2027. Hadelich also returns to leading orchestras worldwide, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Additional engagements include solo recitals across Europe, North America and Asia, as well as a European duo recital tour with pianist Seong-Jin Cho.
Hadelich’s discography reflects his stylistic versatility and spans a broad range of the violin repertoire. In 2016, he received a GRAMMY Award for his recording of Dutilleux’s Violin Concerto L’Arbre des songes with the Seattle Symphony and Ludovic Morlot. A Warner Classics artist, Hadelich released his most recent album, American Road Trip, in August 2024. Recorded with pianist Orion Weiss, the album explores the landscape of American music and received the 2025 OPUS KLASSIK Award for Chamber Music Recording of the Year. His other Warner Classics releases include Paganini’s 24 Caprices (2018); the Brahms and Ligeti Violin Concertos (2019); the GRAMMY-nominated Bohemian Tales, which features the Dvořák Violin Concerto with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Jakub Hrůša (2020); the GRAMMY-nominated recording of Bach’s complete Sonatas and Partitas (2021); and Recuerdos, a Spanish-themed album featuring works by Sarasate, Tárrega, Prokofiev and Britten (2022).
Augustin Hadelich, a German-American dual citizen born in Italy to German parents, rose to prominence after winning the Gold Medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. He holds an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Joel Smirnoff, and joined the violin faculty at the Yale School of Music in 2021. He plays a 1744 violin by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, known as “Leduc, ex-Szeryng,” on loan from the Tarisio Trust.
